Customer experience: Super-besse

PROBLEM

Located at 1350m, on the southern slope of the Puy de Sancy (Auvergne), the Super-Besse resort has recorded a lack of snow for several seasons. This deficit is particularly felt at the start of the season in the area reserved for beginners which is made up of a blue run, a green run and a toboggan area. With its very family-oriented clientele, the resort needs snow to this area as soon as the station opens on December 15.

Average temperatures and precipitation

According to the combination of the surface tables and the weather records, taking into account a 15% melt, WeSnow’s calculations resulted in the need to produce a stock of 21,000 m³ of artificial snow.

WESNOW SOLUTION

WeSnow delivers four WS70 snow guns to the Super-Besse ski resort with a production capacity of 70 m 3 of snow / 24 hours. These machines produce a stock of 21,000 m³ of artificial snow for 75 days, thus guaranteeing snow cover in the area, starting when the resort opens on December 15. Snow production will continue throughout the season in order to increase the snow cover at the bottom of the area. This production allows for good sliding conditions in this area late in the season.

The HRS environmental option (heat recovery): The managers of the station, very concerned about the environmental aspect of their investment, asked us to equip 3 of the 4 machines with our HRS heat recovery device. Thus equipped, the WeSnow WS70 snow guns consume 95kWh for the production of snow and return 209kWh intended for heating the following buildings:

  • the SAEM offices and the cable car station

  • the large hall of the ludo-sportive center

  • the snow groomer garage

CONCLUSION

Super-Besse is the first French ski resort to guarantee snow cover at the bottom of the ski area, starting at the start of the season.

  • By allocating energy expenditure to space heating, Super-Besse produces stocks of snow for an energy balance equal to 0.

  • The return of hot water used for space heating can cut the energy consumption bill for heating by 2.

  • For a better integration into the landscape, our client equips WeSnow snow cannons with organic patterned camouflage panels.
